About a town called Dahab
Dahab is a small Egyptian town with approx. 30.000 inhabitants. It is situated on the southeast coast of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. The nearest airport is Sharm el Sheik, at 80 km distance. There are no busses or trains from the airport to Dahab, so air travelers rely on taxis to get to Dahab. Best is to arrange an airport transfer upfront.
The word Dahab is Arabic for gold. It is said that the name is a reference to the colour of the sands, or to the magnificent sunsets. The old Bedouins tell the story that the town was firstly called "Waqaat Thahaab" (وقت ذهب) which translates literally as "Time Goes". referring to the fact that when you are here, you will easily lose track of time, and some of us never leave.

Dahab used to be a quiet Bedouin fishing village, but is now considered to be one of Egypt's most treasured holiday destinations.

The development of tourism in Dahab started about 20 yrs ago. It all started with the arrival of scuba divers, loving the pristine coral reefs and the diversity and abundance of the colourful Red Sea reef fish. There are more then 15 dive sites in Dahab, from easy to challenging. Most of the dive sites can be entered from the shore. One of the most famous dive sites is of course the Worldfamous Blue Hole. This divesite has also gained popularity with the TechDivers and the Freedivers who are coming from all over the world to train and have their championships here.

Land-based activities include camel riding, horse riding, cycling, scooter rental, jeep and quad bike trips. The Sinai Desert has some amazing wadi's and canyons to visit, such as Wadi WeshWashi, Rainbow Canyon, Salama Canyon and Wadi Arada.

One of the newest activities is Hiking in the Desert. The discovery of many historical and Ancient sites in the Sinai Desert has led to new interest for these off the beaten track destinations. There are several spots where traces of Ancient Desert dwellers and civilizations can still be found.

Close to Dahab, you can find one of the most important sites in Christianity, St. Catherine Monastery. This is the place were allegedly Moses was given the Ten Commands and saw the Burning Bush.
